1877 is a four-piece alternative electronic rock band from Aylesbury. Formed in 2005, the band says it pushes the barriers of post rock and minimal electronica and describes their sound as a melancholic wall of noise and repetition. They have been compared to artists as varied as Sigur Ros, Depeche Mode, and Sonic Youth.
1877 was the year that saw the first ever performance of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, the England cricket team played in the first ever test match, (Australia won by 45 runs), Wimbledon held its first tennis championship and advised the entrants that they needed to bring their own rackets, and Thomas Edison announced the invention of the phonograph which eventually gave us the three minute single and rock and roll.
